NHL Betting

Every year, the closer we get to winter, means the closer we get to hockey, which is basically a
different kind of breed when it comes to betting. The NHL season, usually starts up in early
October and goes all way through early April, which is when we have the Stanley Cup champion,
so hockey enthusiasts have a good 7 months of their favorite past time. If you noticed, the way the
season sport is set up, its structured similarly to the NBA, with 7-8 months seasons and 82 games
per team (1,271 total games per season) during the regular season. The way you bet on hockey is
also very similar to the other major sports, with a couple of tweaks here and there, which we’ll go
over in the article.

Usually, NHL betting brings in die-hard hockey fans who are pretty knowledgeable about the sport,
however, its definitely not as popular as the NFL, NBA, MLB and soccer. Now I don’t want to be
biased, but hockey is Canada’s favorite sport, so if you are reading this and you’re Canadian, you
probably like hockey, right? To strengthen our claim, out of the 32 NHL teams in the league, 7 of
those are from Canada, which is by far the highest amount of CA teams in a North American sport.

But anyways, let’s get to the NHL betting tips, so you can learn more about this sport for whenever
you are ready to dip your toes in placing wagers.

How do I bet on the NHL?
As mentioned before, there are very similar betting types when you compare this to basketball
and football. Moneylines, parlays, over/unders on totals, live betting, etc. But we have unique
types such as puck-line spreads (just like soccer), the Grand Salami bets and the 60-minute line.
Let’s get to it!

NHL Moneyline Bets
Just like other sports, you have the ability to place a bet on the team you think is going to win the
game. If you bet on the favorite of the matchup, odds are they’ll win the game, but you’ll have to
risk higher than what you would win if you are successful. If you bet on the underdog, the odds are
they’ll lose the game, but the risk amount will be less than the total payout because of it. If that
explanation was confusion, lets look for an example.

Let’s say the Detroit Red Wings are playing at home against the Calgary Flames. In this case, the
Red Wings are favored to win with -210 odds, whereas the Flames are the underdogs at +180. This
means that if you want to win $100 on Detroit, you’ll have to put a risking bet of $210 to win $100.
If you want to bet on the underdogs from Calgary, then the better will have to wager $100 to win
$180. We get ups upset all the time, so it’s not too crazy to wager on underdogs, you’ll just need
to study up a bit and select each bet carefully.

NHL Totals Bets

Totals are the same as any other sport, you combine the total goals from both teams in a
particular game, and you choose if it will go over or under the number stated by the oddsmakers.
You’ll notice that over/unders for NHL games are around 6.5, 6, 5.5 or 5 goals on average,
depending obviously on the offensive and defensive ability of the matched-up teams. So if you
truly believe a game will be a high or low scoring game, this should be a walk in the park for you.

NHL Puck Line Bets
If you are familiar with soccer and baseball, then you’ll have an easy time understanding the pick-
line bets in the NHL. These bets are dictated by the 1.5 goal line spread, which basically means
that the favorite (-1.5 goal spread) needs to win by two goals or more, and the underdog (+1.5
goal spread) has the freedom to either win the game or not lose the game by two goals or more.

NHL Parlay Bets
Parlays are the traditional form of selecting various NHL bets together, with the hopes on winning
all of them in order to receive a much higher payout than if you were to bet each one of those
individually. You can even place parlays on the same game as well, you can select the team
through the puck-line and also grab the over or the under on the total of the game, which will pay
$100 to win $260, given both odds are at -110.

NHL Grand Salami Bets
This bet is a particular style of option for NHL and hockey altogether. The Grand Salami bets are
interesting because they combine all the games of the day, which is nice because it gives
importance to every single encounter put together. In essence, this is a bet on the over/under of
the total goals scored for the day. There isn’t too much science into this, but if you choose the
over on the Grand Salami, you’ll be praying all games are full of goals, whereas if you go for the
under, pray to the hockey gods that the offense is having an off-day.

NHL 60-Minute Line Bets
This NHL bet is just like a moneyline game, the difference is that it only includes the three periods
of the game and offer a Tie draw) option as well. When NHL teams tie after the full three periods,
they head into overtime, but when you place a bet on the 60-minute line, overtime has no say in
the outcome. So, if you feel its going to be a tight game, it’ll be smart to put your attention here,
as the Draw line will become an attractive option to choose.

All in all, NHL betting is fun, especially if you truly enjoy this sport on ice. You’ll of course have the
chance to bet on future bets, player props, team props and live betting during the game. Make
sure you dive into the hockey rink and participate in a friendly Grand Salami bet on the NHL. For
